Pregnancy is one of the most transformative seasons of a woman's life, and a maternity photography session is a way of pausing inside that transformation and saying: this moment mattered. As a maternity photographer based in North Kellyville, I've had the privilege of photographing dozens of expectant families across the Hills District, and I'm sharing everything I know to help you plan the perfect session.
When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Session?
The sweet spot is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the baby bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you're still comfortable enough to move freely, try different poses, and enjoy the session.
If you leave it past 36 weeks, you risk the session coinciding with unexpected early arrival, which happens more often than you'd think. Book early and give yourself flexibility.
Pro tip: Book your maternity session at 20–22 weeks, schedule it for 30–32 weeks, and rest easy knowing it's locked in.
What to Wear for a Maternity Session
I provide every client with a detailed maternity styling guide, but here are the fundamentals:
- Flowing dresses in neutral or muted tones photograph beautifully, the fabric movement adds elegance to every frame
- Form-fitting options (body con or wrap dresses) showcase the bump's shape with beautiful definition
- White, cream, dusty pink, sage green, and earth tones all work wonderfully in our outdoor locations
- Avoid busy patterns and heavily branded clothing, they distract from the subject
- Bring a second outfit if you'd like variety, a change of look adds range to your gallery
I also have a small wardrobe of maternity-friendly gowns available to borrow for your session, just ask when you enquire.
The Best Locations for Maternity Photography in the Hills District
Rouse Hill Regional Park: The open paddocks, heritage fencing, and eucalyptus groves make this a stunning setting for maternity portraits. Golden hour here is extraordinary.
North Kellyville bushland reserves: Quieter and more intimate than Rouse Hill Regional Park, these locations offer dappled natural light through native trees, perfect for a soft, dreamy maternity look.
Indoor studio, North Kellyville: For clients who prefer a more controlled environment, particularly during summer heat or winter chill, my North Kellyville studio offers beautiful natural light and a completely private setting.
Including Your Partner and Family
A maternity session doesn't have to be just about the bump. Some of the most powerful images I create are of couples, the way a partner's hands rest on the belly, the look between two people about to become parents for the first time (or the second, or the third).
Including older children is also wonderful, capturing siblings meeting the bump for the first time is something families treasure forever. I've photographed many maternity sessions that seamlessly transition into family portraits.
What to Expect from Your Session
A typical maternity session with me runs for one hour and covers 2–3 outfit looks across 1–2 locations. I guide you through every pose, you don't need any experience in front of a camera. My goal is for you to feel beautiful, relaxed, and completely at ease.
Your private online gallery will be ready within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you'll receive access to your fully edited images and can select any additional prints or albums you'd like.
- Maternity sessions from $150 · 1 hour · Up to 2 outfit changes
- Available outdoor (Hills District) and indoor (North Kellyville studio)
- Private gallery delivered within 2–3 weeks
