Photography Workshops in Sydney's Hills District: Learn Portrait Photography with Shekhar Jay

Whether you've just bought your first DSLR or mirrorless camera, or you've been shooting for a few years and feel like you've plateaued, a photography workshop can be the turning point that takes your images to the next level. As a photographer based in North Kellyville who's been teaching workshops for several years, I want to share what makes a great workshop, and why location matters more than you'd think.

Why the Hills District Is Perfect for Learning Portrait Photography

The north-west corridor of Sydney, Rouse Hill, North Kellyville, Castle Hill, Kellyville Ridge, offers an extraordinary variety of natural light conditions and outdoor environments within a compact area. Within 20 minutes of my studio, we have:

  • Open golden-hour paddocks (Rouse Hill Regional Park)
  • Dappled light through native eucalyptus canopies
  • Heritage farm aesthetics (Rouse Hill Estate)
  • Suburban park environments ideal for practising with real families
  • A natural light studio in North Kellyville for controlled indoor practice

This variety means workshop participants get real-world experience across multiple lighting scenarios in a single day, something you can't get in a classroom or from YouTube.

What You'll Learn in My Portrait Photography Workshop

Camera Settings Demystified

Most beginners are stuck in Auto mode, not because they're lazy, but because manual settings feel overwhelming. In my workshops, I break down aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in plain English, using your actual camera, in real shooting conditions. By the end of the morning, you'll understand exactly why your camera is doing what it's doing.

Natural Light Mastery

Light is everything in portrait photography, and the good news is, you don't need expensive studio equipment to create beautiful images. I'll show you how to read natural light, how to position your subject in relation to it, and how to use simple tools (a white t-shirt works as a reflector) to shape it.

Posing & Direction

Directing subjects is a skill entirely separate from technical photography, and it's one most self-taught photographers never properly develop. I'll walk you through my posing framework for individuals, couples, and families, and you'll practice with real people during the workshop.

Lightroom Editing Workflow

A great image starts in camera but finishes in editing. I'll walk through my complete Lightroom workflow, from importing and culling to colour grading and exporting for web and print. Participants receive my personal preset collection to take home.
