"What should we wear?" It's the question I'm asked more than any other before a family session. And it's completely understandable, outfit choices can feel high-stakes when you're investing in professional photography. The good news? Getting it right is simpler than you think, and these guidelines have been tried and tested across hundreds of family sessions in Sydney's Hills District.
The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don't Match
The biggest mistake families make is buying identical outfits. Matching white shirts and jeans can look dated, and it puts enormous pressure on everyone, particularly kids who'd rather be anywhere else, to stay pristine. Instead, choose a colour palette of 2–4 complementary tones and let each person express their own style within it.
Think of it like decorating a room: the pieces don't need to match, but they should belong together.
Start with one key piece, usually mum's outfit, and build the rest of the family's colours around it.
Colour Palettes That Photograph Beautifully in Sydney
Neutral & Natural (most popular in Hills District sessions): Cream, warm white, sage green, dusty rose, caramel tan, chocolate brown. These tones look stunning against the golden grass and eucalyptus backdrops of Rouse Hill Regional Park and North Kellyville.
Monochrome with texture: All black or all white can work beautifully, but the key is introducing different textures, linen, denim, knit, to add visual interest and stop the image looking flat.
Bold & vibrant: If your family has big personalities, don't be afraid of colour. Burnt orange, deep teal, cobalt blue, all of these can look incredible when used intentionally. The trick is keeping the palette to 2 bold colours maximum.
What to Avoid
- Bright white (reflects harshly in direct sunlight, opt for cream or ivory instead)
- Busy patterns and logos (distracting in photos and date quickly)
- Neon or fluorescent colours (create unwanted colour casts on skin)
- Completely matching outfits (can look stiff and dated)
- New shoes that haven't been broken in (your feet will thank you)
What the Kids Should Wear
Children's outfits are where families often overthink things. My advice: dress them in something they're comfortable in and don't stress about perfection. A fidgeting, uncomfortable child is a much bigger problem in photos than a slightly mismatched outfit.
That said, layering works beautifully for kids, a simple tee under a linen overshirt or a soft cotton dress over leggings gives you flexibility and extra texture in the frame.
If your toddler has a favourite item of clothing that brings them joy, even if it's a dinosaur shirt, consider letting them wear it. Happy, comfortable children make for the most beautiful, genuine photographs.
Seasonal Style Tips for Sydney Sessions
Spring (Sep–Nov)
Floral prints, soft pastels, linen fabrics. Layering is useful as spring evenings can turn cool quickly.
Summer (Dec–Feb)
Light fabrics are essential, linen, cotton, chambray. Lighter colours work better in harsher light. Schedule your session during golden hour to avoid the midday heat.
Autumn (Mar–May)
My personal favourite season for family photography in Sydney. Warm tones, rust, mustard, olive, terracotta, look extraordinary against the golden afternoon light. Layers add visual depth.
Winter (Jun–Aug)
This is underrated as a photography season. Knits, coats, scarves and boots make for beautiful, cosy images. The low winter light in Sydney is extraordinarily beautiful.
